Winged Brush Co. is operational!

Well, it's official: My good mate Tyr (Gert d'Hollander) and I started the 'Winged Brush Co.', a miniature painting service. We just took the plunge. We strife to do really awesome singles, but will also lend ourselves for full armies if that is what is asked.
I really hope it'll get off the ground. We just got our first assignments for an online shop, so that could mean a kind of steady flow of orders. But I want to take on more. I hope to fill three full days of work, since I will be losing my job soon, and am looing to fill the gap this way. Would be cool...

Check out the gallery HERE or email us on wingedbrushco@hotmail.com
Now back to painting for the Golden Daemons...!

Dark Angels Veteran, part 2

I promised some painting WIP's. Well, here they are. I have been dabbling with so many various color's of green, that for the love of God I cannot reproduce that here anymore. But i know that first I put a moderately dark green basic layer on, and from that worked my way towards the highlights. I didn't go as far as I intent to go, because I still needed to do some shading too, and didn't want the contrast too big.

So after this I added shades with a lot of browns in it. Another reason to shade it darker was to give more contrast between the various components. After all that was done, I went back to the highlighting, trying to capture the glints off of the armour. I made a mix of greens and Space Wolf Grey. It really felt natural and in my eyes looks stunning.
Also in these pics you'll see that I started to work on the cloak. This is a bit dark basic color, but I definately intent to clear that up soon enough :P

still so much to do....

Dark Angels Veteran, WIP's

After Gamesday Germany, I frantically started up a new project. I was not sure why, or what to do with it, but as it is progressing, I might very well try to finish it for Gamesday UK, and have a model I really have my heart into. I have been hesitating to show tese WIP pics before they were finished, but then I thought: what the hell! maybe I'll get some pointers along the way...

The vision to do this came to me in a dream - well, half wake actually - and the next day I found out whether I could pull it off. I had this image of a Space Marine thumping his Powerfist into the ground, slamming the concrete to bits.
I found I had a set of kneeling legs from the Missilie Launcher model, which fitted the purpose perfectly. After some kitbashing, this is what I came up with:

You can see that later on I was not overly satisfied with the sword-arm, so I added a different one, pointing back and upwards, and this felt much more correct.
But, as fond as I am of Dark Angels, and because I felt it had to be MORE, I decided to sculpt a cloak on it. If I was to enter it into a painting competition, this should also score me some more credit, so why not. This is also when I found out the Milliput is really the sculpting putty for me! MY GOD, I love this stuff!

I must say that I am very satisfied with how this came out. Next was the background. I wanted to do something like a wall, a very high wall. I regret that I didn't placed the model a bit more forward, because now he will get a bit too close to the wall to my liking, but I figure that's tough luck. I want to do a gritty gothic Cities of Death style of wall behind him, but in such a way that it seems as though there is a really huge building behind him, stretching both ways, yet the only thing you see now is the width of the base. This is what I came up with (still needs some work, like loose cables, maybe a gargoyle, battle damage, etc)

Next time I'll show some painted pics, as I just started yesterday evening on the green armour. The very first layers...

Epilogue to Golden Daemon Germany

Well, that was a bust!

No, I am greatly exaggerating. I went to the Golden Daemon Awards in Colonne, Germany, with the entire Saints team, and entered a Death Korps of Krieg model (pics below!), which I just started a few weeks ago, just as a doodle. I should have known that it would not even make the cut to the next round. It was no surprise however, when I saw all the great entries: I knew they were way out of my league. What's more, I intended to meet some of the big players there, but failed to meet with ANYONE. I didn't even visit the workshops as thouroughly as I wanted.

I went home with a few illusions crushed. Yet, in all honesty, I had to admit that I had not shown the best of my abilities in that particular model either. So I need to look at what I CAN do, to earn a worthy place between those other entries.

The best thing I took from Colonne was that I saw first hand what I had to do to get near a prize winning model. I reviewed both the  Death Korps model and my original entry for the UK. There is much work to be done. So muh work in fact, that I am reconsidering entering the UK Golden Daemon this year, work on the model and give it a try next year. I don't have much time left: I am sarting studies in a few weeks, and work after this weekend. Bye bye happy days....

In the meantime, when I got back from Colonne I grabbed one model from my Dark Angels army, and went to paint away the frustrations. This is a Terminator Apothecary that I still had to do to complete the unit. Luckily, this only needs to be done 'tabletop' quality, so I really finished it in one day. That was fun to do...

Death Korps model

While I am furiously working on the Golden Daemon model for the UK, I wanted to doodle a bit, to get some distraction from that model, just to do something else. I started to work on this Death Korps of Krieg model I once bought from Forgeworld. I wanted to do a toxic waste-theme, with a really sickly looking horse, but my first try (back then) was a complete failure. So I thought I'd get back to this and redo the whole thing. This time, with the same pale skintone in mind, I approached the colorscheme in a whole different way. I started with a base coat of Rotting Flesh, then added shading with Camo Green and later added some Midnight Blue to that. For highlight I added just a pinch Elf Flesh to the Rotting Flesh, and later even a bit of Skull White.
Next was the uniform, which I did with Scaly Green, then added Scab Red for shading. For highlights I mixed a bit of Space Wolf Grey with Scaly Green and Hawk Turquise, and later even more Space Wolf Grey.

I think it is turning out great, and maybe, MAYBE, if I'll be able to finish it before next Sunday, I'll even enter it in the Golden Daemon Germany, where I will be going to with the entire gang. Gonna be fun!
